Review: You Should Own.com

February 1st, 2008 · 1 Comment

nice homeYou Should Rent - You Should Own.com is a corporate blog and real estate site by a Cleveland, Ohio realtor. Not surprisingly the blog is all about real estate.

Two for Tea - There are two main parts to this site. The first is a general real estate page. It’s quite standard really. Home selling tips, a million different attempts to get your contact information, a “wanna be a realtor?” page and of course ads. Ads? Oh, I’ll get back to that one. It’s boring in absolutely every respect. They’re realtors, they’re not going to try anything cool or fancy because they’re appealing to boring people who want to buy boring homes. There are people out there who are willing to go edgy and sell to a younger and cooler crowd, this is not You Should Own. These guys want to sell homes to the stereotypical middle American. Perfect because they’re in middle America.

Blog 8B/0.5B - The other part of this site is a corporate blog. This blog really serves to draw traffic to the realtors and make sure the Cleveland, Ohio community knows about them when they want to buy a house. The information is incredibly well presented, accurate, frequently updated and helpful. This blog is written by someone who knows what they’re talking about. These don’t seem like the kind of guys who go door to door trying to sell you a condo in a crackhouse. The blog also runs ads and loads of other popular “hey, I’m a blogger look at me!” applications. I’ll get to that in a second, wait.

Design in 30 Seconds or Less - This site is home to one of the most boring designs I’ve ever seen on a website. The blog is actually one of the default Wordpress themes without any real editing. Seriously. I think they changed the colors and that’s it. How boring do you have to be? Couldn’t make your own title? Couldn’t find another less defaulty theme? The non-blog part of the site is equally boring but I guess that’s a good thing.

Apparently There’s No Money in Real Estate - These brokers must suck. They must be the worst brokers on earth. Why else would they be running ads on their site? I run ads on this site because there’s no other way for it to generate revenue, I’m a bastard and I want to make money. But these guys are trying to draw clients into their offices to sell them houses or sell their house for them. Why run ads? It makes the site look cheap like a Cleveland hooker.

ghettoSpeaking of Cheap - Apparently in the suburbs of Cleveland you can buy a three bedroom house with multiple bathrooms and a decent yard for around $150,000. Do you know how much a house like that would cost in Los Angeles? Assuming it’s not in the ghetto you’re talking about $750,000, minimum. And if it’s in the ghetto? Maybe $600,000. I shit you not. Why the fuck does it cost so much to live in LA? For the rent I pay on a one bedroom apartment with stained walls I could buy a three bedroom house with a backyard the size of Japan. But then I’d have to live in Cleveland. Never mind.

What’s To Hate? - This site is fine. It’s supposed to draw buyers in to buy a home through this real estate site. It’s boring because that’s their image. People assume boring means safe. They’re wrong, but it works. This site needs to get rid of the ads. Would they plaster an ad for Best Buy on the wall of a house they’re showing? No, that’d be cheap. Then why do it on this site? And get rid of all those dumb ass tools that bloggers use to draw traffic and show how popular they are. This is not a Britney Spears blog or a “how many elfs can I fuck” blog it’s supposed to represent a business. Show some pride.

It’s an independent site ran and written entirely by me.

It’s really easy keeping up with Ohio’s largest real estate site and remaining a top producer in my office. (Look at me! Look at me!)

I’m glad you found things boring, drab, and cheap.

(Love the Flickr photos you used, especially that magnificent building in Beirut!)

If you dug a little further than the few pages you did, you’d find that the ads are strategically placed on pages not dedicated to serious online home buyers.

I don’t expect you to know what my market or viewers call for, but that’s cool.

A few hundred dollars in revenue per month makes capturing those who are leaving the site anyway, beneficial.

I appreciate the time you took to express your class, candor and profanity in this well written and meaningful review.

I’m sorry you live in a closet in LA with stained walls.

    All the best.
